Interviewing Case Was Not on My Vision Board for 2026

If you had asked me a year ago if I’d be sitting across from Grammy-nominated R&B artist Case, interviewing him in front of a room full of people, I probably would’ve laughed.

Not because I didn’t think I was capable, but because it simply wasn’t on my vision board.

That’s the funny thing about God. Sometimes He’ll open doors you never even thought to knock on.

A few days ago, I had the honor of serving as the official host for Matcha Mondays, a new monthly conversation series in Birmingham designed to bring people together through meaningful conversations, networking, and community. It was one of those events where you could feel the energy in the room. Professionals from different backgrounds showed up, people made new connections, and for a couple of hours, everyone slowed down enough to simply be present.

Then came the moment that still feels surreal.

I interviewed Case.

The voice behind songs like Touch Me, Tease MeMissing YouHappily Ever After, and so many other records that have become the soundtrack to our lives. His music has stood the test of time for nearly three decades, and yet there I was, not as a fan asking for a picture first, but as a journalist leading a conversation.

Talk about a full-circle moment.

As I prepared for the interview, I realized something.

Every opportunity doesn’t have to make sense when you first receive it.

Sometimes your only job is to walk through the door God opened.

We’re so busy trying to map out every step of our lives that we forget God isn’t limited by our plans. We create vision boards, five-year plans, and bucket lists, and those things are great, but God has a way of saying, “I have something even better.”

Hosting Matcha Mondays wasn’t something I chased, it was something I was trusted with and that trust reminded me that preparation is never wasted.

Nicole Sade’ Interviewing Case

Every interview I’ve conducted, every article I’ve written, every event i’ve hosted, every uncomfortable season where I questioned if anyone noticed my work… God was using all of it.

When the opportunity came, I didn’t have to become someone new. I simply had to show up as the person He’d already been preparing.

One of my favorite moments from the evening happened after the interview. I asked Case if he would perform Happily Ever After.

He smiled… and he did.

The room lit up.

People sang every word.

For a few minutes, everyone was transported back to different moments in their lives, reminded of just how powerful timeless music can be.

I left that evening with more than great photos and memories.

I left with a reminder, be patient.

Not passive, but patient.

Keep showing up. Keep doing excellent work even when it feels unnoticed. Keep saying yes to the assignments God places in front of you, even when they don’t look like the opportunities you imagined.

Because one day you’ll look around and realize you’re standing in a room you never prayed for, but one God had already prepared for you and you’ll understand why He asked you to trust Him instead of your timeline.

Sometimes the greatest blessings aren’t the ones we planned.

They’re the ones God positioned us for.
