There comes a point in every woman’s life when she realizes confidence isn’t something she puts on, it’s something she decides.
For the longest time, I thought “owning the room” belonged to the loudest woman. You know the one, thats effortlessly funny, everyone knows her name, and somehow every conversation circles back to her.
Then I started attending more networking events, galas, media events, and conferences. I watched women who barely said ten words completely command a room. Not because they were the prettiest, they had the most expensive outfit, or because they had the biggest social media following.
It was their presence, and that’s when it clicked.
Owning a room has very little to do with making everyone notice you. It has everything to do with making sure you notice yourself first.
Sis, your energy introduces you long before your business card does.
If you’ve ever walked into an event feeling underdressed, intimidated, or like everyone else had life figured out except you, welcome to the club. We’ve all been there. The good news is confidence is a skill, not a personality trait.
Here are four ways to start owning every room you walk into.
1. Dress Like You’re Already Her
Let’s get one thing straight: confidence doesn’t come from clothes, but the right outfit can absolutely remind you who you are.
Wear the dress that makes your shoulders sit back. Put on the heels if they make you feel powerful. Find the lipstick that makes you smile every time you catch your reflection.
When you feel beautiful, you move differently, you stop shrinking yourself, and you stop apologizing for taking up space.
You’re not getting dressed to impress everyone else. You’re getting dressed so the woman in the mirror recognizes herself.
2. Stop Waiting for Someone to Introduce You
One thing I’ve learned from attending events is this: everyone is waiting for someone else to make the first move.
Be that woman to walk over, smile, introduce yourself, and ask someone what brought them to the event.
Some of the best opportunities, collaborations, and friendships don’t happen because you’re the most connected person in the room. They happen because you’re willing to say, “Hi, I’m Nicole.”
The conversation you almost didn’t start could be the one that changes everything.
3. Own Your Story Without Downplaying It
Can we stop pretending our accomplishments are “not that big of a deal?” I’m working on this….
Celebrate them, you earned them.
Whether you’ve published a book, started a business, earned your degree, landed a promotion, or simply survived a season you never thought you’d make it through, that deserves to be acknowledged.
Women have a habit of shrinking their stories to make other people comfortable.
Your journey isn’t bragging, it’s proof of what’s possible.
Speak about yourself with gratitude, not guilt.
4. Remember That You Belong
This might be the most important tip of them all.
You don’t have to earn your seat at the table every single day.
You belong there.
Not because of your followers.
Not because of your job title.
Not because of who invited you.
You belong because you showed up.
Sometimes we spend so much time wondering if people like us that we forget to ask ourselves if we even like the environment we’re trying so hard to fit into.
Not every room deserves your energy.
The right rooms won’t make you feel like you have to audition for acceptance. They’ll make space for your ideas, your voice, your laughter, and your authenticity.
So the next time you walk into a networking event, a dinner party, a boardroom, or even brunch with the girls, don’t walk in wondering if you’re enough.
Walk in knowing you have something to offer.
Owning the room isn’t about being the loudest woman there.
It’s about being the most comfortable being yourself. There’s nothing more magnetic than a woman who knows exactly who she is.
